At a very young age, she has already lost two babies to pneumonia. Her predicament is a hard cruel vicious circle. The mother’s gaze is almost mesmeric, however the child’s gaze is also engaging and intriguing; he or she is gazing as intently as the mother – but away to the left, towards something outside the image, completely ignoring the photographer (and, by extension, the viewer).
